A destination wedding comes with a different set of questions than a traditional wedding at home — from room blocks and passports to wedding packages, guest travel and the difference between a travel specialist and the resort's wedding coordinator.
We've answered the questions couples ask most often so you can understand what a destination wedding actually involves, how the process works and where we come in.
01 Start Here
-
A destination wedding is a wedding held somewhere away from your hometown, typically requiring you and your guests to travel to the destination.
For our couples, that usually means an adults-only all-inclusive resort in Mexico where your wedding, accommodations, meals, activities and honeymoon can all happen in one place.
Instead of gathering for one evening, your wedding becomes an entire experience — often several days of celebrating, relaxing and spending time with the people you love.
-
The biggest difference is that your wedding and your guests' travel are connected.
With a traditional wedding at home, your guests generally arrange their own transportation and accommodations separately from the wedding.
With a destination wedding, you're coordinating:
Resort
Wedding date
Wedding venue
Room block
Guest accommodations
Flights
Airport transportation
Wedding package
Wedding-related events
Travel deadlines
Guest questions
The upside?
Your wedding can become a wedding week instead of one wedding night.
Guests get a vacation, you get more time with the people you love, and your honeymoon can begin the moment the wedding is over.

02 Working with Salty Knot Events
-
Yes. Really.
There is no planning fee for our destination wedding travel services.
We are compensated by the resort or travel supplier when we arrange eligible travel bookings.
That means you receive our expertise and support without paying us an additional planning fee.
You'll still pay for your own travel, accommodations, wedding package and any other services you choose.
You were going to book the resort anyway. Why not have an expert help you do it?
-
Technically, no.
You can research the resort, contact the hotel, arrange your room block, coordinate your guests' reservations, answer their questions, track payments and manage the travel details yourself.
But you don't have to.
And because our destination wedding travel services are free to couples, many couples choose to have an expert handle the travel logistics instead.
We help with:
Resort selection
Destination guidance
Room blocks
Group contracts
Guest reservations
Travel questions
Payment deadlines
Airport transfers
Resort communication
Guest travel logistics
You plan the celebration. We'll handle the travel.
-
Absolutely.
This is one of the biggest reasons couples choose to work with us.
Your guests will have questions about rooms, payments, flights, transportation, arrival dates and more.
Instead of every question coming directly to you, your guests can work with us for their travel arrangements and questions.
You get to be the bride or groom — not the travel agent for 30 people.
-
Yes.
Typically, each guest is responsible for their own:
Flights
Resort accommodations
Airport transportation, when applicable
Travel insurance
Personal expenses
You can decide if you want to contribute toward any guest costs, but couples generally aren't expected to pay for everyone's trip.
-

03 Who Does What?
TRAVEL SPECIALIST
Travel + Guests
Wedding Planner
Design + Wedding Details
Resort Coordinator
Onsite Wedding Execution
-
There are typically several professionals involved in a destination wedding, and they each have a different role.
-
That's us.
We handle the travel and guest logistics surrounding your wedding.
Resort selection
Comparing options
Room blocks
Group contracts
Guest reservations
Travel questions
Payment deadlines
Airport transportation
Resort communication
Travel logistics
We work for you and your travel experience.
-
A wedding planner focuses on the design, vendors and execution of the wedding itself.
Depending on the planner, this can include:
Décor
Flowers
Linens
Tables and chairs
Entertainment
Photography
Vendor coordination
Wedding design
Timeline creation
Wedding-day execution
-
Your resort wedding coordinator works at the resort and coordinates the wedding with the property's wedding department.
They typically help with:
Wedding package details
Ceremony setup
Reception setup
Décor
Menu selections
Timeline
Resort vendors
Hair and makeup appointments
Wedding-day logistics
We don't replace your resort wedding coordinator. We work alongside them.
04 Your Guests & Room Blocks
-
A room block is a group of rooms that a resort holds specifically for your wedding guests.
Instead of asking every guest to find and book their own accommodations, we work with the resort to establish the group arrangement.
A room block can help you:
Keep guests at the same resort
Establish group rates
Organize guest reservations
Make booking easier
Potentially qualify for group perks or concessions
The requirements vary by resort.
-
It depends on the resort and your wedding contract.
Some resorts have minimum room-night requirements, guest requirements or outside-guest fees.
This is one of the things we review before couples commit to a property.
05 Passports & Ceremonies
-
Yes.
For U.S. travelers flying to Mexico, guests will need a valid passport and must meet Mexico's current entry requirements.
We recommend checking passport expiration dates early — for you and your guests.
-
Symbolic ceremony
A symbolic ceremony is a non-legally binding wedding ceremony performed at the destination.
It can look and feel just like a traditional wedding.
Legal ceremony
A legal ceremony is legally recognized by the country where you are married and can involve additional documentation, requirements and procedures.
Many couples choose a symbolic ceremony in Mexico and complete their legal paperwork at home because it can simplify the destination wedding process.
06 Timeline & Planning
-
Ideally, around 10–12 months before your wedding.
This gives you time to:
Choose your resort
Secure your wedding date
Establish your room block
Give guests time to budget
Request time off
Book flights
Handle passports
Plan wedding details
Make payments over time
Some couples plan 18+ months ahead, while others plan in a shorter window.
-
After your wedding date and room block are secured.
Ideally, around 8–12 months before the wedding.
Your guests need time to:
Request time off
Budget
Renew passports
Book flights
Make resort payments
Arrange childcare or pet care
-
No.
Destination wedding travel is typically paid according to the resort's payment schedule rather than requiring the entire trip upfront.
Exact deposits, installment schedules and final payment deadlines depend on the resort, room category and group contract.
We'll make sure you and your guests know what is due and when.
-
Not necessarily — but it can be helpful.
A site visit allows you to see the resort, rooms, restaurants, beach, pools and wedding venues in person.
However, visiting every resort you're considering can become expensive.
We'll help narrow down your options first so that if you do a site visit, you're visiting properties that actually fit what you're looking for.

We handle the travel side for you and your guests — including resort selection, room blocks, guest reservations, travel questions and transportation logistics.
